Sally was born in Australia in Gerroa, a small country town just south of Sydney. She was your typical Aussie youngster keen to play all sorts of sports. As a teen she was staring down a path set before her at the 2000 Olympics by the great Cathy Freeman. As a runner, Sally won gold in the 800m and 1500m at the Australian Youth Olympics and went on to run qualifying times for World Juniors in Czech Republic. Sally’s infatuation with sport and living an active lifestyle were clear but it was the ocean that could provide her with the competitive environment she loved, and also the space to remain mindful and in touch with the natural world. Sally’s built a formidably competitive career with 12 WSL World Tour Championship wins and three runner-up finishes to the World Title (2010, 2011, 2012). Sally won the World Junior Championship in 2007 and again in 2008 and then won the World Qualifying Series the same year to qualify for the elite World Surfing Tour. Since finishing fifth in her rookie year on tour, she’s been a world title contender every year since, finishing in the top 5 on the tour nine years out of fourteen years. In 2011 Sally won her first WSL World Tour event at the 50th Anniversary Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. A week later she went back-to-back in New Zealand at the Subaru Pro. Then in August she won the Nike US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach, California. With more victories in Australia, Brazil, France and Fiji Sally’s been a figurehead in the evolution of women’s surfing, in an era that’s bridged the gap in performance. Nothing better highlights her determination and courage than her 2015 Fiji Pro victory at the famed Cloudbreak Reef, beating the entire field despite suffering a painful perforated eardrum in the second round. Sally is the author of two books ‘Live Like Sally’ and ‘Summer Fit - All Year Round’ and encourages all she comes in contact with to lead active and healthy lifestyles. Sally Olympic dream disappeared in 2009 when she joined the World Surfing Tour but as fate would have it Tokyo 2021 introduced Surfing as a new Olympic sport and Sally has qualified to represent Australia finishing 5th.
