My name is Cara Stubbs, I am 27 years old. I was born and raised in Muizenberg, Cape Town and started surfing there at the age of 7. Surfing has since been a huge part of my life. Being selected to surf for South Africa and compete against the worlds best has been a dream of mine for a very long time. So competing in ISA worlds is a huge honour.
Aside to surfing, I am a professional Landscape Architect at Vida Design Studio. Vida Design Studio specializes in sustainable Masterplanning and Landscape Architecture. Sustainable design, which enables integrated systems that can benefit both humans and nature equally, and restore a human-nature connection is what drives me as a designer. Surfing is my joy, where I am most at one with nature.
Give me cooking waves and thriving nature and I am a happy chappy.

My name is Mbuso Zozi, and I'm a 27-year-old South African surfer from Vrygrond, Cape Town. Born on April 30, 1998, I've had my fair share of challenges growing up in a community affected by crime, poverty, and social issues. However, surfing became my escape and passion at the age of 11, thanks to Surfshack Surfschool's outreach program in Muizenberg.
Surfing Career
As a regular-footer standing at 5.2ft, I've competed in various shortboarding and longboarding contests, achieving notable success:
- 2nd Place, South African National Championships 2023 (J-Bay)
- 3rd Place, U/23 Tigers Milk Winter Classic 2018
- 2nd Place, U/23 Tigers Milk Winter Classic 2017
- Stand Out Surfer of the Competition, South African National Championships 2023
- National Colours, representing South Africa at the ISA World Championships 2024 (El Salvador)
Sponsor and Support
I'm grateful for the support of J-Bay Fin Design which enables me to pursue my surfing dreams.
Beyond Surfing
When I'm not in the water, you can find me playing football or DJing. Follow my journey on Instagram @MbusoZozi as I strive to make waves both in and out of the water.

My name is Mary Slijpen, and I’m 21 years old, living in Cape Town with Llandudno Beach as my home break. Safe to say, I’ve had my fair share of brain freezes.
My dad taught me how to surf when I was young, after seeing him teach my older brother Luke. My younger brother Connor shortly followed, so our family pretty much revolved around all things ocean. (Funnily enough, both my brothers have represented South Africa at ISA, so my dad’s dream of having surf-rat children has definitely come true.) Most of our friends grew up close to us, so we were always doing something fun—whether it was surfing, jumping off rock jumps, bodysurfing in the shorey, or doing lifesaving at Llandudno Surf Lifesaving Club.
I got into shortboarding first and only discovered longboarding when I was around 15. Llandudno’s freezing cold, heavy close-out barrels weren’t ideal for learning to longboard, so in winter, when the banks are really good, I would spend most of the day surfing Muizenberg’s perfectly peeling lefts and rights. I am the only person in my family who longboards, so it was definitely different learning all the new tips and tricks, but once I did, I was definitely sold! I love being able to surf a variety of boards in all different types of waves, and the community and friendship surfing brings.

Surfing and skating
I grew up in Muizenberg, Cape Town. Growing up in Cape Town was such a privilege considering how much surf we have. I started longboarding at around 16 years old and that changed my perspective of surfing quite a bit, that's when I started riding all different types of boards. Besides surfing I'm passionate about specialty coffee and skateboarding. I feel like surfing and skating have shaped me into who I am today and I'm super grateful for that. Ironically I've been living in Germany for the past few months and been doing a few surf trips to get some waves. I'm pretty stoked to have gotten the call up to represent South Africa at this years ISA world longboard champs, it feels like such a honour to represent SA. I'm looking forward to a fun event and scoring some waves. During this event I'll be using a Supers V2 by J bay Fin Design and the honey model 9,4 by Olive Surfboards.
