I'm Gemma Gillespie, and I'm a proud late bloomer when it comes to surfing. I didn’t pick up the sport until my late twenties, and it wasn’t until I was 31 that I got my first proper longboard. From that moment on, I was hooked. Living proof that it’s never too late to start something new, I entered my first competition at the age of 38, and I’ve never looked back. In 2019, I won the Irish Longboard Championship, and the following year I qualified for the Irish National Surf Team. Unfortunately, COVID meant I didn’t get the chance to represent Ireland in 2020, but qualifying again this year and finally getting to surf for my country is a dream come true. Ireland has always had a strong community of talented male longboarders, but it’s been such a joy to watch more and more Irish women embrace longboarding. Every year, the standard gets higher and the numbers grow, it’s inspiring to see the sport evolving in such a positive way. For me, surfing isn’t just about competition, it’s about connection, community, and continuing to push yourself, no matter when or how your journey starts.
