Douwe is a multi-talented surfer, he loves competing on longboards and shortboards. He started surfing in the Netherlands at the age of 7, followed by several years surfing and travelling Europe with his family in a camper van. In the past two years Douwe lives in the South West of Portugal where he can train every day in challenging and great conditions. In 2023 it was his first time competing with Team Netherlands at the European and World Championships Longboarding and at a WSL competition. Last year Douwe further started an exciting co-operation with Lufi, shaper in Caparica, Portugal, who custom shapes Douwe's boards. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve felt a deep connection to the ocean. Growing up in the small coastal village of Wijk aan Zee, the sea was always just a few steps away and it quickly became both my playground and my greatest inspiration. Surfing became my passion, and over the years, that love for the ocean evolved into something even bigger: a mission to protect it.
As a Dutch Longboard Champion, my dream is not only to become one of Europe’s top female longboarders, but also to use my platform to raise awareness for the urgent need to protect our marine ecosystems. I believe that every wave we ride should also be a voice for the ocean.
Beyond surfing, I’m deeply involved in environmental activism. I work as the Operational Manager for Surfrider Foundation, where I coordinate campaigns focused on protecting the North Sea and our beaches; from water quality measurements to plastic pollution education. I also actively speak out against pollution caused by Tata Steel, Europe’s largest steel plant, which is located right next to my hometown and emits dangerous carcinogens that threaten both people and nature.
In addition, I contribute to MoreTreesNow, a reforestation initiative where we restore trees to help boost biodiversity and empower people to take action for our climate.
Through everything I do, whether it’s in the water or on land, I strive to be an ambassador for a healthy, sustainable future. For the ocean, for the planet, and for the generations to come.
