I prefer less well-known and less crowded spots.. except for JBay of course. I started surfing because of my disability, not despite it. My boards are regular boards but have the volume shifted forwars a bit to help me paddle. That makes me more of a rail surfer. I surf better on right-handers when it is small and on left-handers when it is big. I have almost 300 skydives. I am married to Bev and we have two cats. I am a photographer by profession.  That is about it..

I’m Lerato Seroke, a 19-year-old para surfer from Ncandu, Newcastle, South Africa. My journey hasn’t been an easy one, but it’s shaped me into the person and athlete I am today. When I was 8 years old, I was diagnosed with bone cancer, and that same year, I had my leg amputated above the knee. It was one of the hardest moments of my life  everything changed overnight. But even in that pain, I found strength. I learned that sometimes life doesn’t go the way we expect, but it’s up to us to decide how we move forward. I chose to rise. I discovered surfing at 15, when I was in Grade 9, and that’s when everything clicked for me. From the moment I touched the board and felt the water beneath me, I knew this was something special. Surfing gave me freedom  freedom from pain, from fear, and from limitation. It made me feel alive again. To me, surfing isn’t just a sport. It’s a culture, a way of life, and a form of healing. When I’m out there, nothing else matters  not my disability, not my past, not my challenges. It’s just me and the ocean. I often say “surfing is a religion where I get to call the waves my saviour,” because every time I ride a wave, I feel closer to peace, purpose, and gratitude. I’m proud to represent South Africa as a para surfer and to show others that anything is possible when you believe in yourself. My goal is to keep growing as an athlete, to compete at the highest levels of para surfing, and to inspire more people with disabilities to discover the ocean the way I did. Surfing has taught me so much about patience, resilience, and faith. It’s not just about winning or losing; it’s about connection, healing, and pushing past what you thought was your limit. Every wave reminds me that no matter what life throws at you, you can always rise above it. This is more than a journey for me  it’s my purpose, my passion, and my story.
