I was born in Cuba and raised in Puerto Rico. My parents and I left Cuba in 1985 with nothing but really happy for that Bless,  I was 9 years old. I have live in many places like Mexico, Miami, Melbourne FL and Puerto Rico. I stared surfing when I was like 10 or 11 years old. My cousing Tony gave me my first surfboard, it was a Pelicano Surfboard, a local brand, the board had like 40 some dings and heavy like a brick. I started surfing in Pine Groove Beach, then Tocones, Aviones, Hallows, and so and so. Started competing when I was 15 but I did not had good results until I was a little more older. I worked since I was very young age cleaning cars, paperboy, ding repairs, doing haircuts, sales, hotels, etc. A friend gave the opportunity to work under his wing as a sub-rep for a mayor surf brand, also I was reping other little surfbrands to complement. I learned a lot from the surf industry and retail. Also thanks to 2 friends I end it up having a surf shop called Mundaka Surf Shop from 2000's until 2009 and couple of months. In that era I was comping in ESA PR (Easter Surfing Association Easter Divition, Puerto Rico Surfing Federation and Asociacion Profesional de Surfing de Puerto Rico. I had really good results overall but I think was 2007 were I was in the ESA Open Division Champ and Masters Champ too.

Barb has lived in the NW of Puerto Rico since 1958. She started surfing and sailing, racing Hobie Cats at the age of 16. Along with Becky Taylor, the two of them represented PR at many ISA events, well into their 40's, until eventually surfing started getting popular for the younger Puertoriqueñas in the mid-90's and the torch could be passed.  Barb currently works as a massage therapist and CranioSacral Therapist. She lived in Santa Cruz to expand her knowledge in bodywork, and returned to PR in 2022. In her off time, Barb enjoys spending time with her family and friends, her Bootcamp/crossfit classes with Megan May's "fit fam" group, sailing the islands of Eastern Puerto Rico, and is learning to wing foil. Barb is involved with the local environmental group, La Liga Ecologica del Noroeste, which was successful in the 90's in a lawsuit that stopped a mega resort from being built right next to Wilderness, one of the top surf breaks in Puerto Rico and home of the 1988 ISA Worlds Surfing Competition. The resort had planned to put in a breakwater which would killled multiple surf breaks. The issue has come back again as developers are looking to get permits without changing any of the original plans. Multiple groups are currently working together to stop the renewed plans for development and make the area between Wishing Well/Peña Blanca and Wilderness into a nature reserve.
