Becky Benson Jay Becky moved to Hawaii with her family as a young child in 1967. She was nine years old. Her Dad, Col. Albert Benson (better known as “The Col.”) fell in love with the ocean and bought surfboards for his kids and a camera for himself. So at a young age, Becky and her siblings learned how to surf and before long began entering local competitions while their Dad became a well-renowned surfing photographer. Becky & sister, Blanche, began competing in the local Hawaii Amateur Surfing Association competitions. Fortunately, for the first few years, they surfed in different age divisions so didn’t have to compete against each other (Becky was always intimidated by Blanche’s bravery and skill at surfing huge Sunset). Becky’s amateur highlights included being the youngest girl to win the prestigious Makaha International Surfing Competition at the age of 14. She won this competition four times, surfing against women from all over the world. Becky also won the Hawaii State Championships on the three occasions she competed in the event. For two years, she was recognized by the Hawaiian Surfing Association as the most outstanding woman surfer of Hawaii. Becky began surfing professionally in 1976, being one of six female surfers on the first professional surfing tour. In 1976, she placed 2nd in the Lancers World Cup at Haleiwa, missing first place by ½ a point. In South Africa, she once again placed 2nd in the Durban Hang Ten Championships and in the Rico Women’s Professional Championships in Brazil, she won 1st place. Highlights in 1977 included placing first in the Mabo Pro at Haleiwa & 2nd in the Rico Pro in Brazil. In 1978 she won 1st place in the Makaha Women’s Pro. In 1982, Becky won the Op Pro Surfing Championship, now known as the U.S. Open, at Huntington Beach, CA. This was her most prestigious win, earning her a brand new Dodge Ram Sport 50 4x4 truck and a check for $2,500. Becky retired from professional surfing in order to complete her college degree and focus on her career. She taught Special Education for 27 years on Oahu. She is married to her husband Dave & has two children, John-Michael & Jennifer & two darling grandchildren. She is now retired from teaching and enjoys spending time with her family and traveling and surfing as often as possible. When she’s not surfing, she enjoys yoga, swimming, biking & walking. Becky can’t wait to teach her two grandchildren how to surf!
