After whitewater kayaking, then surf kayaking, Jonathan moved to surfing, then SUP surfing whilst living in Maui, HI. Moving back to the UK Jonathan kept SUP surfing, then picked up a second-hand race board after the COVID lockdowns. He entered his first race in Cardiff, Wales, in 2021 and has gradually lost more and more time to training and racing. He won the British National Championship (Ages 30-39) in 2023 and won both events at the first Scottish National Championships in 2024, earning him a ticket to Copenhagen for the ISA World Championships.

I grew up on the family farm on the Isle of Arran, just off the west coast of Scotland so I have a few random skills such as sheep shearing and maintaining my 60 year old vintage tractor. My board paddling experience started off when I trained as a “clubbie” (volunteer lifesaver) on Bondi beach back in 2014/15. After my travels I continued prone paddling as away of cross training for swimming which used to be my main competitive sport. After a couple of summers, and lots of jelly fish, I started to experiment with SUP and got a cheap inflatable and it just kind of went on from there. Soon SUP become my main form of exercise, paddling in the sea all year round. I ran a SUP school for a couple of years but time and weather weren’t on my side so decided to focus on my own SUP skills and see what I could achieve. Eventually after the covid years I did my first race in July 2022. Since then I have competed in over 20 events across the UK and even in Sweden and Spain. I love both the physical and technical aspects of the sport, there's always something to tweak and something to learn.

54yr old flying the flag for older women! And the 1st ever team from Scotland Hopefully Completed 2x220km in the week leading up to Copenhagen at 11cities. My partner (Allistair) & I have already done this twice before racing tandem. We have raced tandem all round the world from the 404km Massive Murray marathon in Australia to the 100mile California River Quest, we have done the Great Glen nonstop too, a little closer to home twice just for fun. I have paddled the Paris nautic race 7 times  and the Corinth race in Greece, so I have raced some smaller distances but the tech race is something totally new and out of my comfort zone, even the distance race is a little short compared to what I'm used to! Im hoping to soak up the atmosphere in Copenhagen being the first Scottish team and laying the foundations for future Scottish paddlers
