“The Impossible Wave” is an award-winning documentary that tells the story of the remarkable efforts of the ISA and its President, Fernando Aguerre, across 27 years, to secure the inclusion of surfing in the Olympic Games.

Produced and directed by Jay and Jessica Johnson, the documentary paints the picture of Aguerre’s life. It shows how his lifelong love of surfing led him to become a successful entrepreneur and business leader, before being voted as President of the ISA in 1994.

Over the course of more than two decades, Aguerre sacrificed exceptional amounts of time, finances, and, most importantly, waves, to accomplish his greatest achievement – securing a place for surfing in the biggest sports event in the world, the Olympic Games.

Featuring industry leaders including IOC President Thomas Bach and Quiksilver Founder and Former CEO Bob McKnight, along with Olympic Gold Medalists Carissa Moore and Italo Ferreira, the film is an engaging insight into an unorthodox leader dedicating his life to an impossible dream and an improbable sport making its debut in the Olympic Games.

The film is even more relevant on the eve of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The location of Teahupo’o, Tahiti for the surfing competition will be the furthest podium from an Olympic Games venue in history, it is also potentially its most ambitious venue due to the extreme nature of Teahupo’o’s waves. Aguerre’s dreams continue.

ISA President, Fernando Aguerre said:

“I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I started paddling for the Olympic wave. I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy paddle, but I had no concept of the sacrifice involved. I gave over 12,000 hours of my time, and an untold number of waves, to see this dream come true. Nothing makes me happier than seeing the current generation of surfers bearing the fruits of that labor. While this movie tells my story, it also shows that I didn’t do it alone.

“My hope is that this movie inspires other dreamers to believe that anything is possible and I am so excited that many will have the opportunity to watch this incredible story while embarking on exciting journeys of their own.”
