ISA Scholarships Awarded to Young Surfers from 23 Countries

December 17th, 2024

The International Surfing Association (ISA) is proud to announce its latest group of ISA Scholarship recipients. Forty young surfers from 23 countries will share USD $20,000 in funds to support their education and surfing-related expenses, including training and competition costs.

The scholarship recipients represent a diverse global community, with 22 young men and 18 young women from nations including Ghana, Turkey, Venezuela, Liberia, Jamaica, Philippines, Colombia, Iran, Sao Tome and Principe, Thailand, and Madagascar, among others.

The geographical spread highlights the ISA’s mission to expand the sport to new regions and welcome new participants and fans. Scholarship recipients are selected based on their financial need as well as dedication to both education and surfing.

The ISA Scholarship Program was established by ISA President Fernando Aguerre in 2007. Since then, more than USD $408,500 in grants have been awarded to benefit the lives and surfing careers of over 400 surfers.

Several past ISA Scholarship recipients have developed into elite, competitive surfers who have won medals at ISA events, including Daniela Rosas (PER), Carlos Muñoz (CRC), and Chelsea Tuach (BAR). Rosas qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games by winning the Gold Medal in the Women’s Shortboard at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre said:

“For over 15 years, we’ve been providing opportunities for young surfers from all across the globe through our ISA scholarships. Nothing brings me greater joy than seeing these young surfers grow.

“We’re not just supporting athletes, we’re inspiring dreams and creating opportunities for kids from every corner of the world. Our scholarship program isn’t just about surfing; it’s about giving young people a chance to succeed, whether that’s in the water or in life. To each of these incredible scholarship recipients, I wish you the greatest success. Your journey matters. And I can’t wait to see some of these amazing athletes representing their countries at the highest levels, maybe one day even at the Olympic or Paralympic Games.”
