ISA CIP Course in Italy   Martin Dunn Surf Coach  SUP Surfer
The ISA Coaching & Instructing Program is designed to develop the skills, knowledge and abilities of those individuals who wish to obtain a scientific approach to the coaching and instructing of surfing.

The objectives of the ISA Coaching & Instructing Program:

  • To establish an international system of Coaching and Instructing Courses, improving the safety and efficacy of surf instruction around the world.
  • To further develop, through educational programs, a body of knowledge on which Coaches and Instructors may draw.
  • To provide Coaches and Instructors with employment opportunities, encouragement and support.
  • To advance surf coaching and instructing as a globally standardized and highly professional activity with stringent requirements.

Background:

The official recognition acknowledging the relevance and appropriateness of the content of the ISA courses, comes from the Australian Coaching Council accredited Surfing Australia courses, from which the ISA programs have been customized for international use.  Twenty-five years of very successful development is contained in these programs and approaches.

After endorsing the Australian programs for many years, the ISA is now releasing its own international surf coaching education program and sees this as the establishment of an “international standard for accreditation of coaches and instructors in the surfschool industry.”

The Program:

Level 1 Surf Instructor
The ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Accreditation is the current industry standard for surf instructing in quality surfschools.  This Course has the broadest international appeal.

Level 1 Surf and SUP Instructor
A Level 1 SUP module is available for current level 1 Surf Instructors for a dual credential.

Level 1 Flat Water SUP Instructor
A Level 1 Course for Flat Water SUP stand alone accreditation will be available in the Autumn of 2011.

Level 2 Surf Coach
An ISA Level 2 Surf Coach Accreditation for elite contest preparation is also available. All Level 2 Surf Coaches MUST have completed and passed an ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Course prior to approval as a Level 2 Surf Coach.

Over time this program will expand to many other areas of professional development education for our great sport of surfing.  All ISA Coaches and Instructors must abide by the local laws and regulations of the area in which they work. All ISA Instructors must be a minimum of 16 years of age to become an accredited ISA Instructor but must work under supervision of an ISA Instructor over 18 years of age.  An ISA Instructor must be a minimum of 18 years of age to instruct without supervision.

To view upcoming Courses and locations where Courses have been held previously, please visit our Future Course Schedule.

All ISA Coaches and Instructors , upon completion of all Course requirements, will be placed on the ISA International Coaching and Instructing Register for twelve months after completion.  To view the Register, click on the area of interest on the map above.

ISA Certification Renewal:

In order for an ISA Coaching or Instructing Certification to remain current,  Coaches and Instructors are required to pay an annual renewal fee of USD$100 per year to the ISA for Level 1 or Level 2 and USD$125 for Level 1 plus SUP.  This fee must be paid by the Expiration Date listed on the International Register, the Certificate and the Wallet Card.  If the renewal fee is not paid within 60 days after the Expiration Date, a late penalty of USD$50 is incurred.  Beyond 60 days and a late penalty of USD$100 is incurred.  To renew your Certification, please vist the ISA Store.
